Drumojo Drum Circles

What is a drum circle?

A drum circle is where a number of people play drums and percussion instruments in the moment, to create a cohesive and exciting performance under the subtle direction of a facilitator (conductor) in the middle of the circle.

No experience of playing drums or percussion instruments is needed and age is not important making a drum circle a great place to relax, unwind and have some fun.

The instruments in a drum circle typically include hand drums like african djembes, congas and bongos, drums needing beaters like dun duns, surdos and floor toms as well as different types of shakers, tambourines, cowbells and woodblocks. Together, at different tempos, volumes and timbres you will be surprised at how exciting the experience and sound of a well facilitated and orchestrated drum circle can be.

Why run a drum circle?

At first glance, a drum circle might just seem like some simple, childish fun. Actually there are many hidden benefits.

Firstly, you need a number of people, typically 10 to 50 or so, could be more. Participants could be from a local community group, they might work together in a business, organisation or department, they might be attending a conference or an event together. It could be for a special event, like a party or a launch or a part of a regular get together for a club or team.

What are the benefits?

Secondly, the organisers of the event should have a good idea of what they want their event to achieve and what role the drum circle can play. Of course a drum circle will help you entertain your particpants, equally it can help improve morale and build team spirit.

Drum circles can be a simple way for a group of people to socialise or to build teamwork and understanding between people who will be working together and connecting with each other in the future.

From a local community to a business, from a group of young people to older people in a home, you will be surprised how the power of drumming together can release endorphins, make people happy, better communicate and focused to achieve.
